Punctum Books and JSTOR are developing a new partnership to support open access monographs. Established in 2011, Punctum Books is a global leader in the publication of humanities and social sciences research, having released nearly 300 titles and developed critical infrastructure for open access. JSTOR, a digital library for academic work, is a critical mode of research and discovery for scholars and the public. In collaboration, Punctum and JSTOR will be working toward more discoverable and interoperable open access scholarly publications.
At the recent ER&L conference in Austin, representatives from JSTOR’s parent organization Ithaka presented recent data that underscored the importance of JSTOR’s linked discovery tool-sets for researchers and the public. Since its founding in 1994, JSTOR remains the preeminent method for connecting people to digital scholarship with a repository of over 12 million journal articles, 85,000 books, and 2 million primary source materials.
Over the past several months, Punctum has built a number of partnerships with institutional libraries, scholar-led publishers, and open-source technology organizations toward the development and strengthening of infrastructures for open access scholarship. Punctum is committed to the belief that building resilient networks and community will proliferate knowledge as power for all people.
By partnering with Punctum Books, JSTOR signals a commitment to this paradigm shift in publishing. Opening access for research is, now more than ever, a critical act of knowledge production and community development.
