It's That Time of the Year: Submission Season!
·

punctum books is a scholar-led and queer-led open-access press.

From May 1 until July 31, prospective authors and editors are invited to submit their manuscripts for review by the directors of punctum books (Eileen Joy and Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei) and its Editorial Advisory Board.

We welcome submissions from academic and para-academic authors working in any field in the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, and architecture/design. In particular, we would like to invite female-identifying, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and/or differently abled authors whose work concentrates on social justice to send in their manuscripts for consideration.

Also important for us also this year are books from the LGBTQIA+ community that offer dispatches from the front lines of trans lives, where sex, sexuality, class, gender, and identity intersect in ways that continue to trigger (often lethal) violence against trans pesons, which deserves more attention and care within the LGBTQIA+ community. Denial of gender reassignment identity papers, denial of medical assistance, denial of access to education, the banning of books, anti-trans sports bans, legal restrictions such as bills forbidding public school teachers to create safe, inclusive learning environments for LGBTQIA+ students, and more. According to CBS News, over 240 legal actions were filed against LGBTQ persons and groups just this year, compared to 42 in 2018, with most of these bills aimed at trans folks in particular.

This is a civil rights issue and everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community should step forward now and work to protect and advocate for the dignity and rights of trans lives (as all of us must do for all civil rights movements that are always ongoing struggles).

It’s also worth emphasizing that things are not always bad, such as the election of Danica Roem to the U.S Virgina Statehouse, and things are not all joyless, just as in the 1980s, with so many deaths during the AIDS crisis, gay men and women didn’t stop dancing in the queer clubs late into the night while also turning their homes into hospice shelters. There was caring and dancing, laughter and tears.

We are looking for scholars from the trans community who want to share their knowledge and thinking on these and other issues with a wider public commons. Please bring your work to us.

More information on the submission process can be found on our website.
